Referee Deniz Aytekin apologizes for VAR glitch: ‘We slipped through’

In the Bundesliga game between SC Freiburg and Mainz 05, a clearly irregular goal by Mainz counted. Reason: The VAR checked another scene.
In the game between SC Freiburg and FSV Mainz 05, 05 defender Alexander Hack scored an irregular goal, but the VAR did not intervene. Referee Deniz Aytekin later apologized for the faux pas.
“We actually checked the handball. The ball came down from above and the focus was completely on handball when receiving the ball,” Aytekin commented on the decisive scene sky. Goalscorer Hack was hit by the ball before the opening goal to make it 1-0, but after viewing the video material, the Kölner Keller decided on a regular goal.
Referee team overlooks offside
What the referee team failed to notice, however, was that Hack had been offside immediately beforehand. “The ball is crossed in the middle and the goal scorer is offside if he heads the ball. The goalkeeper is still saved, but it’s not a new situation in the game. That’s why it would be offside and the goal shouldn’t have counted. It slipped through for us, it’s annoying “, says Aytekin.
Freiburg coach Christian Streich took it easy. “Mistakes like that can happen. It would have been a shame if we had lost as a result.” In the end, a late goal by Joker Nils Peterson equalized for the sports club.
