Werl is the new leader: the Friday night there was very warm, almost tropical.

Friday night was the warmest ever measured in Germany at the end of October. The leader was Werl in North Rhine-Westphalia. The temperature there did not drop below 18.5 degrees. “That’s only 1.5 degrees below a tropical night,” said Andreas Friedrich from the German Weather Service (DWD) on Friday in Offenbach.

The previous record in the third decade of October was set more than half a century ago on October 24, 1966 in Lahr in Baden-Württemberg with 16.7 degrees. “This shows that we are currently experiencing an extremely mild October,” said Friedrich. As soon as the temperatures do not drop below 20 degrees between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., meteorologists speak of a tropical night.

Switzerland experienced warmest October since 1864

In Switzerland, meanwhile, the warmest October since records began in 1864 is coming to an end. This was announced by the Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology in Bern on Friday. In many places it was around one degree warmer in October than the previous highs. The national average was 3.7 degrees above the average for the years 1991 to 2020 (as of October 28). Under the influence of the foehn, the regional daily average temperature was sometimes even 8 to 9 degrees above the long-term average.

On Friday it got up to 25 degrees warm in many places in Switzerland. Ten years ago, however, on October 28, 2012, the Swiss woke up under a blanket of snow down to the lowlands.
