Unusually high temperatures are expected at the weekend: in parts of Germany it is expected to be up to 30 degrees – normal would be ten to 15 degrees. Dust from the Sahara could cloud the sun.
After real April weather with rain, storms, showers, hail and heavy rain, Germany is facing a summer weekend with temperatures of up to 30 degrees Celsius and lots of sun. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the peak values expected for Saturday are “absolutely record-breaking” for the first third of April. Loud ARD Weather Competence Center Highs of ten to 15 degrees would be normal for the beginning of April.
DWD meteorologist Marcel Schmid said that no record would be set for the entire month of April. It comes from 2012 and is 32.9 degrees, which was measured in Kitzingen and Bad Mergentheim. However, these peak values were reached at the end of April, when the sun was higher than it is now. “We will definitely break the previous record for the beginning of April, which was set at 27.7 degrees in Rheinfelden in 2011,” said Schmid.
Saharan dust could obscure the sun
The reason for the high temperatures are currents from the southwest, which bring unusually warm air masses from the Iberian Peninsula and northern Africa to Germany. According to the DWD forecast, 25 degrees are expected on the Upper Rhine on Friday. However, it is expected to rain again and again in the north and west of the country. On Saturday, summer in April breaks out almost everywhere.
However, with the warm air from the south, Sahara dust is coming to Europe again, which, as it did on Easter weekend, could cloud the sun and dampen the temperature development somewhat. However, according to current calculations by DWD meteorologists, it should still be over France on Saturday and spare Germany.
February and March are the warmest since measurements began
This year, February and March have already brought record temperatures in Germany. Both months were well above the previous record values since measurements began in 1881. According to the DWD, the last time there were two consecutive monthly records was in 2018, in April and May.
With a sunshine duration of 120 hours, March was sunnier than in the comparable period from 1961 to 1990 with 111 hours. However, compared to the period 1991 to 2020 (127 hours), the DWD registered a slight decrease. Berlin was the sunniest with 158 hours of sunshine.
Slight cooling from Sunday, but it remains mild
On Sunday it will become more changeable again in the northwest half. According to the DWD, it remains very mild there with a maximum of 18 to 23 degrees. In the southeast half it is expected to remain unusually warm at 24 to 30 degrees.
At the start of the new week, it remains summery and warm in the south and southeast with peak temperatures between 23 and 27 degrees. In the other parts of the country it remains relatively warm with highs between 18 and 23 degrees.
