Squeaking trains and a loud babble of voices – four young people are standing excitedly in front of Berlin’s main train station. In the new reality podcast “Out – off through Europe”, four young people are sent on a three-week Interrail journey without knowing each other beforehand. Can this go well?

Journey through Europe in podcast format

“Haven’t we all been inside way too long the last few years? Isn’t it time to just get away? Just get out, discover the world! The sea! The mountains! Good food! And new people! Exploring unknown places, new experiences And make dreams come true.” Anyone who feels addressed by these words is in the right place with “Raus – Ab durch Europa”. Laura Larsson, moderator and podcaster (“Herrengedeck”) takes us on an Interrail journey across Europe Europe.

The special? “Raus” is the first “reality podcast” – it quickly becomes clear what that means: background noise, authentic live sound recordings – here we are not only talking about a journey, you are right in the middle of it and accompany the four travelers up close.

“They are strangers and have never met – until now.”

The four are the lucky ones chosen from 7000 applicants. “They come from different corners of Germany and grew up completely differently. They are strangers to each other and have never met – until now.”

Jannis, Timothée Chalamet lookalike and “Sunny boy type who seems to fall for everything”. Grete, who has just finished her fashion design studies and is “hanging around a bit” and feels like “finding something that I’m one hundred percent up for, where I am really thrive”. Rap musician Alex, who can’t imagine having the same job his whole life (“I’d break down.”). And passionate rave-goer Leo, for whom the worst thing is “being bored and disappearing into the crowd.”

“The basic concept is that we actually all have no idea what’s happening.”

In conversations about horse towels, “ugly as night”, the love for balaclavas and latex clothing, “cool animals in Scandinavia” and hated deep talks at parties, one thing immediately becomes clear: the four are completely different. And now they’re supposed to sit on top of each other 24 hours a day for three weeks – can that work out?

Laura is standing in front of Berlin Central Station, waiting for the four to arrive. In an hour, the train leaves for the first station of “Raus”. “Jannis comes towards me, he looks relaxed… well maybe not so relaxed.” No wonder, after all, a journey into the unknown awaits him: “The basic concept is that we actually all have no idea what is happening.”

Three weeks without a cell phone

But not only the travel companion and route are uncertain, the four have also signed a contract, Laura reminds her: “That’s why Jannis almost wanted to jump off again. I understand, I think that most of us would start thinking here. Three weeks without Mobile phone, that’s difficult for everyone!”, especially if you actually have a screen time of 11 hours a day, like Jannis. Will he really survive the three weeks without a mobile phone?

Everyone is allowed to send one last voice message, then the cell phones are collected, or “an organ is removed from them,” as Alex comments. What nobody thought of: without a cell phone, not only are social media and news services lost. They all have no alarm clock, flashlight or a watch with him.”Of course, that would have been absolutely practical!”, Laura laughs. But now it’s too late for that – well, if that doesn’t soon lead to problems, Laura suspects: “The fact is: none of them have ever entered a foreign city without a smartphone and found their way around.”

Can the four of them find their way around the city without smartphones?

Will they complete the journey that began as a foursome together?

Now they are ready, if not perfectly equipped, for a journey into the unknown, full of surprises and challenges. The microphones are always on board and show honestly and unembellished how strangers become friends, how they clash, the mission threatens to fail and how they grow with their personal challenges. Will they complete the journey that began as a foursome together?
