“Real” singer Kim Frank: “I didn’t want to leave out anything unpleasant”

Kim, Gunnar, Puffi, Kai and Flo, those were the guys from “Echt”. Kim Frank made a three-part coming-of-age film about everyday life in the band and growing up in the nineties, which has a lot of love in it.

20 years after the end of “Real” you have a film about yours youth made. How did that happen?
The five of us try to meet at least once a year, which is not easy to coordinate between jobs and families. In February 2022 we had a boozy evening and that’s when we realized that we never did anything with the video material we filmed when we were young. We’ve done that now and thanks to the films we see each other a lot more regularly now, which is nice.

They viewed 240 hours of video material. How did you decide which scenes to show?
There are many music documentaries in which the band members tell their heroic stories. That’s exactly what I didn’t want. Sometimes it was exhausting to listen to five sixteen-year-olds talking stupid things for half an hour in the videos. But I didn’t try to make us look cooler than I felt when I watched the tapes. When writing the script, I based it on the stories that I like to tell the people I love. For example mine Womanwho I met after “real time”.
