Real Madrid king of clubs in terms of turnover, PSG 3rd

Real Madrid regains its crown at the top of the football economy. The club generated the highest turnover in the sport last season, while PSG now ranks third in a ranking where ticketing and commercial revenue have become dominant.

With 831 million euros in turnover for the 2022-2023 financial year, it is for the Spanish club a return to the top of this ranking established by the Deloitte firm. He had not occupied it since the 2017-2018 season. As for PSG, it climbs onto the podium for the first time with nearly 802 million euros, behind Manchester City (826 million).

Return to stadiums after the pandemic

The twenty best performing clubs financially recorded a record cumulative turnover of 10.5 billion euros, up 14% compared to the previous season. This growth was fueled by records in ticketing (1.9 billion euros) and merchandising (4.4 billion).

According to Deloitte, football fans flocked to stadiums after the end of health restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic period. On the other hand, revenues collected from TV broadcasting rights have stalled.

Barca dominates women’s football

More broadly, the study notes a link between the sporting performances of clubs and their financial results, as illustrated by the case of Liverpool, which rose from third to seventh place in this ranking, and fifth in the Premier League last season. Even if Real Madrid and PSG relied more on their commercial performances.

For its part, women’s football has experienced a boom. The average turnover of its 15 richest clubs increased by 61% in one year, to 4.3 million euros. Women’s FC Barcelona dominates the ranking with 13.4 million euros.
