Top politicians have paid tribute to the late Green Party co-founder Ströbele as a straightforward and combative person. Green leader Nouripour called him an “icon of the struggle for democracy and peace”.
After the death of Hans-Christian Ströbele, politicians from various parties paid tribute to the Green politician. Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on Twitter: “His drive was to do politics and change society. With Christian Ströbele, Germany is losing a combative politician who has shaped the political debate for decades. My thoughts are with his family.”
Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck said his party friend Ströbele was a politician “who impressed many people – me too – because of his straightforwardness, his unwavering commitment to civil rights and social policy”. Bundestag Vice President Katrin Göring-Eckardt said “t-online”: “A crosshead and free spirit has left us.” Ströbele was a parliamentarian and Green through and through. “His drive was the defense of civil rights against any state authority,” says Göring-Eckardt.
“Stroebi, we will miss you”
Party leader Omid Nouripour wrote on Twitter that with Ströbele the Greens would lose “an icon of the struggle for democracy and peace”. “I am losing a wonderful ex-office neighbor from whom I learned so much about critical, substantive and respectful discourse. Hans-Christian, rest in peace.” Co-party leader Ricarda Lang wrote: “He deeply impressed me with his integrity and his unflinching fight against injustice. With him is a great politician, lawyer and person who has shaped our party but also our entire country.”
The Greens parliamentary group leaders Britta Haßelmann and Katharina Dröge also made statements. “Not reconciling yourself with injustice, fighting passionately for democracy and the rule of law. That’s how we knew you,” wrote Hasselmann. Dröge explained: “Ströbi, we will miss you! First Green party to ever win a direct mandate. Passionate fighter for the rule of law. Stubborn, sincere, undisguised. Without you, the Greens would not be what they are today. It is with sadness that we say goodbye. “

“A wonderful person”
The political director of the Greens, Emily Büning, explained: “We mourn our friend, companion, guide, (pre-) fighter – the wonderful person Hans-Christian Ströbele. We will say goodbye to you, dear Ströbi, now ours Thoughts of your family. You will be missed.”
Ströbele died last Monday at the age of 83. The former RAF lawyer was one of the founding members of the Greens and sat for the party in the Bundestag for 21 years.
