Re-election in Berlin: Greens choose Bettina Jarasch as the top candidate

When the Berlin elections are repeated in February, Bettina Jarasch is supposed to lead the Greens to victory. At the small party congress, 92.5 percent of the delegates voted for her to run for the office of governing mayor.

On Saturday afternoon, the Berlin Green Party elected Bettina Jarasch as their top candidate for the re-election on February 12th. At the small party conference in Berlin, 37 of the 40 delegates present voted for the incumbent senator for transport and the environment, which corresponds to an approval of 92.5 percent. The 53-year-old already led the Greens in the election campaign last year.

After the verdict on the re-election, however, their list was a formality. Because according to the verdict, the same candidates who could be elected in 2021 must stand for election.

“Berlin deserves new leadership,” said Jarasch before her election at the small party conference. “And I’m ready to take that lead.” At the same time, Jarasch made it clear that she would like to continue the coalition with the SPD and the left after the election. “Our preference is clear: we want to lead a coalition with red-red.”

Previously, 18 leading Greens politicians at the district, state and federal level had written to party members campaigning for Jarasch to be re-elected. The Greens also want to emerge from the election as the strongest party, Jarasch is to replace the Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD). “After more than 20 years of SPD leadership in the Red City Hall, it’s time for an update so that Berlin and its administration can function again,” the letter said.

At their small party congress, the Greens also want to decide on their programmatic priorities for the election campaign. Among other things, they are calling for an “update” for politics and administration so that the city can function better.

The Constitutional Court decided on Wednesday that the election to the House of Representatives must be repeated in its entirety. The vote was invalid because of “serious systemic deficiencies” and many electoral errors. The election date was published in the Berlin Official Gazette on Friday.
