announcement next week
According to information from “Kicker”, what has not yet been officially announced is already fixed: Max Eberl is to start as the new head of sports at Bundesliga club RB Leipzig in January. Accordingly, the 48-year-old refused to start work immediately during the ongoing talks due to the many English weeks. However, the change should be announced in the days after the upcoming duel between Eberl’s “still club” Borussia Mönchengladbach and Leipzig on Saturday. There is still disagreement between the two clubs about the transfer fee, which is said to be around 5 million euros for the “foals”.

Despite his resignation at the end of January due to mental exhaustion, Eberl is still employed by Gladbach until 2026. His contract is only suspended, which is why the club from the Lower Rhine insists on a transfer fee. As the magazine further reports, Eberl indicated his desire to change to Borussia. According to reports, Borussia immediately rejected an initial RB offer of around half a million euros as out of the question. In Leipzig, Eberl would meet coach Marco Rose, with whom he had already worked for two years in Gladbach.

After taking office with the Saxons, the latter had already publicly spoken out in favor of renewed cooperation. Rose and Eberl would never have lost close contact with each other. “At the end of the day we believe that we can work well together,” said the 45-year-old. RB boss Oliver Mintzlaff also said at the beginning of the week that he was on the home stretch in negotiations with Eberl after he was said to have turned down a possible engagement in May: “Now we’re at a point that we want Max to want and I’ll be in talks with Mr. Schippers from Gladbach over the next few days, then we’ll see if we can get together.”
Borussia Mönchengladbach: The fan scene raises allegations against Eberl
On Tuesday, Gladbach’s organized fan scene made serious allegations against Eberl in an open letter. “We simply no longer believe that you were upstanding and honest with us at the end of your tenure at Borussia,” the statement said. Eberl is accused of having negotiated with Leipzig back then. The manager had previously denied this.
Under Eberl, Borussia have spent €295m on the transfer market since the summer of 2009 and earned €218m in the same period. Due to the club’s massive sporting crisis last winter, Eberl, whose work was highly valued for many years, was also criticized. Before the season he had brought in Adi Hütter from Eintracht Frankfurt for 7.5 million euros as Rose’s successor, whose early departure from Gladbach to Borussia Dortmund had already led to discord.
