Many people have only used their cell phone for two years and then buy a new one. The contracts of the mobile phone providers promote this, even if a smartphone at this age can still do everything: surf the Internet, play music and take photos. Business-minded people sell their mostly well-preserved “old smartphones” on Ebay, but from now on most devices eke out their existence as “drawer cell phones”. 199.3 million unused cell phones are in German cabinets, according to a 2020 Bitkom study.
