Fewer viewers than ever before were interested in the start of the fourth season of “Charité” on Tuesday evening.

The Hospital Series”Charité” is daring to do something new in season four: for the first time it’s not about medical breakthroughs of the past. Instead, the series production jumps into the future. The new episodes take place in the year 2049 – global warming, the cyberverse and the healthcare system of the future are among the topics. But was this new direction as a science fiction series well received by German television audiences? Judging by the ratings, it wasn’t, as they were lower than ever since the series began in 2017.

Only 2.6 million are interested in the new “Charité” season

In the past, the season premieres of the ARD series have achieved the highest ratings. 8.32 million viewers tuned in at the start of season one in March 2017. But only 2.59 million viewers wanted to watch the premiere episode of the new, fourth “Charité” season on Tuesday evening (April 10th) on the first. This is the worst value of all “Charité” episodes to date and corresponds to a market share of 10.5 percent, as AGF Videoforschung reports.

The opening episode of the fourth “Charité” season also failed to impress the all-important younger audience, the particularly relevant target group of 14 to 49-year-olds. Only 371,000 viewers tuned in for a market share of 7.6 percent.

Lowest in season two so far

For comparison: The lowest value in “Charité” history to date was the third episode of the second season from March 2019. At that time, 4.46 million pairs of eyes tuned in for a market share of 14.1 percent.

But the ARD program immediately beat the low set last Tuesday evening with the second episode, which was broadcast after the first. Only 2.13 million viewers were glued to the screen here, for a market share of 9.2 percent, as “Quotenmeter” reports. In the target group of 14 to 49 year olds, episode two had 270,000 viewers, for a market share of 5.6 percent.

The fourth “Charité” season, set in the future, will be completed later this week on the first. Episodes three and four will air on Wednesday evening (April 10) from 8:15 p.m. on Erste. Episodes five and six will follow on Thursday evening (April 11) at the same time.
