The German rapper Haftbefehl collapsed on stage at a concert in Mannheim last summer. It was apparently his consumption of laughing gas that was to blame – he spoke about it publicly for the first time.

Arrest warrant, real name Aykut Anhan, was one of the most successful rappers in Germany. Last year, however, he experienced a low point: at a concert in Mannheim, the 37-year-old collapsed in 2022 and had to be towed off the stage. Now he revealed in an interview with RTL: In addition to alcohol, he also consumed laughing gas at the time. It is said to have been 50 bottles a day over a period of three months. The consequence of his consumption: the already planned tour had to be cancelled. For his wife, he says, this public crash was the worst moment.

Through acquaintances, he “slid into the consumption of laughing gas,” as the arrest warrant goes on to describe. “The gas makes you a complete zombie,” says the rapper. He talks about colleagues who could no longer walk due to consumption. Ingestion of nitrous oxide produces a brief high, but in excess, it can cause unconsciousness, loss of balance and, in the worst cases, respiratory failure.

Although nitrous oxide requires a prescription for medicinal purposes, it is increasingly being abused as a party drug. Long-term use of the drug can result in nerve damage, impaired cognitive function, and psychological dependence.

However, with his addiction to the gas flash, Haftsperre is not an isolated case. A significant increase in users of nitrous oxide can be seen. The EU Monitoring Center for Drugs therefore warns against taking it. The Netherlands is the only country to have banned the sale of nitrous oxide. Only small cartridges filled with nitrous oxide for use with whipped cream dispensers are freely available there.

Rappers are now clean

“I haven’t had any alcohol in five weeks. I’ve quit smoking and everything that goes with it. I already have those damn balloons anyway […] stopped. IM clean. Thank God!”, according to the arrest warrant. He is opening a new chapter in his life and this time wants to take a “more respectful path”. He also wants nitrous oxide to be banned in Germany. His crash shows that nitrous oxide, as funny as the name is may sound like a dangerous drug that can bring even the toughest rapper to the ground – and should not be for sale on every corner.
