Raphaël Pichon explores the origins of Bach in Thuringia – Culture

Dornheim on the edge of the Thuringian Forest: The village church of St. Bartholomäi is a simple building made of rubble stones. The white and gold altar and the galleries did not yet exist when Johann Sebastian Bach married his first wife Maria Barbara here in October 1707. Raphaël Pichon now conducts “The Lord thinks of us”, a wedding cantata that was written a little later, possibly for the wedding of the priest of Dornheim, who had married Bach as a family friend. The audience, along with the conductor, singers and instrumentalists, came on foot along a dirt path from nearby Arnstadt, where Bach had his first position as organist.
