It’s the ultimate retirement paradise: Portugal. International Living’s annual Global Retirement Index has named the European country the best place to retire internationally. Mexico and Panama rank second and third respectively. The US index assesses criteria such as housing, cost of living, visas/benefits, affinity, development/government, climate and healthcare. Portugal performed particularly well in healthcare and development/government. The diversity of the country, from the landscapes to the culture, as well as the friendly people and – particularly important for US retirees – the high level of English proficiency and special visas/benefits were highlighted as positive aspects. Portugal was also praised for its safety, quality healthcare, infrastructure and affordable cost of living. According to the report, a couple can live well in Portugal on $2,500-$3,000 a month.
