Platée is a special class underdog at the Zurich Opera. He lives in the bowels of the theater building, his duties there are not entirely clear: prompter? Usher? Temporary superintendent? Tenor Mathias Vidal sings the long, high part in an effortlessly beautiful tone, he plays a charmingly upright handsome boy who annoys the theater people, especially the straight man and head of studies Cithéron, with his constant hitting on men. Again and again, Vidal’s Platée scurries lively out of the prompter’s box to unintentionally disrupt the final rehearsals of a musical. Musical?
