The project had caused a stir: the Scottish second division club Raith Rovers wanted to sign David Goodwillie – a convicted rapist. After the jump of a sponsor, the football club has now backed down.

Scottish football club Raith Rovers has distanced itself from newcomer David Goodwillie, who was found guilty of rape, after massive criticism. It was decided not to sign the player after all and talks will now begin with him about his contract, the second division club said in a statement on Thursday.

“When we made our initial decision, we focused too much on football and not enough on what it would mean for the club and the community as a whole,” said club officials. We apologize for that.

Raith Rovers fans criticized goodwill deal

The signing of the former Scotland international drew massive criticism from fans of the club and beyond. A British civil court found the footballer guilty of raping a woman in 2017. However, there was never a criminal case. According to Sky News, Goodwillie had to pay £100,000 (currently €120,000) in damages.

Scottish crime writer and club sponsor Val McDermid had announced after signing Goodwillie that she would end her long-standing relationship with Raith Rovers and “tear up her season ticket.” She had previously warned of the obligation.

Most recently, the 32-year-old player was under contract with third division club FC Clyde.
