Railway will close important connection in the Ruhr area at the end of the week

From Friday, rail customers traveling between the western Ruhr area and the Rhineland must expect significant disruptions. Long-distance trains no longer stop at several large train stations.

“The section between Essen and Düsseldorf will become a major construction site during the Easter holidays,” writes the railway in a press release. The group wants to be around Duisburg bundle as many construction measures as possible in two weeks – from Friday, March 22nd, from 9 p.m. to Monday, April 8th, at 5 a.m.

Diversions and cancellations in long-distance transport

According to Deutsche Bahn, the work will lead to disruptions on the routes between Duisburg and Eat or Oberhausen and further to Dusseldorf.

Trains have to be rerouted

During the construction work, most of the long-distance trains will be between Cologne respectively Düsseldorf and Dortmund redirected.

The trains no longer stop at these stations:

  • Dusseldorf airport
  • Duisburg main station
  • Mülheim (Ruhr) main station
  • and Oberhausen main station.

In some cases, trains between Cologne and Essen, Düsseldorf and Essen as well as Düsseldorf and Dortmund have been canceled, as the railway also announced.

Diversions, cancellations or replacement traffic on regional lines

Lots of construction work at Duisburg main station

In regional and S-Bahn traffic, no trains can run between the main stations of Mülheim (Ruhr) and Duisburg and between Oberhausen and Duisburg. There are also restrictions between Duisburg and Düsseldorf. All regional lines on these sections have diversions, cancellations or replacement services. Specifically, these are:

Replacement buses will be available on the Oberhausen – Duisburg, Essen – Mülheim – Duisburg and Essen – Düsseldorf routes. The adjusted timetables should be displayed in the railway’s information systems – for example when searching for connections on bahn.de.

Numerous railway construction projects during the Easter holidays

During the upcoming closure, the railway wants to, among other things, modernize bridges, finish building noise barriers and replace overhead lines. The railway scheduled the work during the holiday season because there were fewer passengers on the road then.

The important route in Ruhr area was already closed during the last autumn holidays. A closure has already been announced for almost two weeks during the coming summer holidays (July 22nd to August 2nd).
