Rail traffic – railway expands noise protection – economy

Last year, Deutsche Bahn retrofitted more than 70 kilometers of track with noise barriers, among other things. In addition, more than 1,800 apartments have been equipped with soundproof windows, the group said. For around 33,000 residents, this reduced noise pollution from rail traffic in 2021. “Our common goal: by 2030, more than 800,000 residents living and sleeping on railway lines in Germany will be quieter,” said Andreas Gehlhaar, the railway’s noise protection officer. According to the federal government, this corresponds to around half of all people affected by rail noise. On average, 125 kilometers of track are to be renovated annually, which was clearly missed in 2021.
