RAF search: student dormitory in Berlin searched

As of: March 5, 2024 9:39 a.m

The former RAF terrorists Garweg and Staub remain in hiding. The police continued the search for them in Berlin. There was a search in a student dormitory in the Friedrichshain district.

The police continue to search for the two former RAF terrorists Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub who went into hiding. The search is currently apparently focusing on Garweg, who is now 55 years old. During the night, police forces searched an apartment in a Berlin student dormitory.

As the lead Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office announced, the operation in the dormitory on the street of the Paris Commune in the Friedrichshain district was over. There were no arrests. The authority did not provide any further details about the search.

According to the information, the police also continued the search of an apartment on Grünberger Strasse in the same district. The apartment had already been searched for clues over the past two days. However, the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office did not provide any information about possible leads.

Several apartments and trailer sites searched

The two wanted people, along with Daniela Klette, who was arrested last Monday, are said to have belonged to the third generation of the left-wing extremist terrorist group Red Army Faction (RAF) and to have been in hiding for more than 30 years. The trio is accused of several attempted and committed robberies, which they are said to have committed to support themselves. These investigations are being conducted by the Verden public prosecutor’s office. But the Federal Prosecutor’s Office is also conducting a series of proceedings in which the three wanted people are the accused. The statute of limitations has been partially interrupted by updated arrest warrants, most recently in 2018. As far as the accusation of (attempted) murder is concerned, a statute of limitations is excluded anyway.

There have been several police operations in Berlin-Friedrichshain in the past few days: In addition to an apartment on Corinthstrasse, a trailer site on Markgrafendamm was also searched. Garweg is said to have lived here temporarily and probably under a false identity. His alleged caravan is currently being examined for forensics.

Garweg is now “really on the run”

The investigators assume that Garweg in particular could come under increasing pressure as a result of the current search. The 55-year-old is now “really on the run,” according to a spokesman for the Verden public prosecutor’s office in Lower Saxony. On Monday, the police appealed to the fugitive to turn himself in.

New mugshots of both Garweg and Burkhard were published after Klette’s arrest. The police hope this will provide clues to the whereabouts of the two suspected ex-RAF members.

The 65-year-old Klette was arrested in Berlin-Kreuzberg, where she lived under the false name “Claudia Ivone”. When the police searched their apartment, they said they found “heavy weapons of war.” Since then, Klette has been in custody and, according to information from, has remained silent ARD capital studio and SWR to the allegations.
