It’s not a premiere, not that: the Austrian actor Karl Markovics undertook a more intensive excursion into radio plays a decade ago, in quick succession in the multi-part series The blinding by Canetti as well Master and Margarita von Bulgakov took on roles, each directed by Klaus Buhlert, and also appeared in a few smaller productions over the years. But so far he has never acted as a narrator in a radio play like he does now Andrew, pointedly staged by the famous, precise Ulrich Lampen. While Markovics lures you into Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s beguiling story, it becomes less and less understandable why radio play directors have largely ignored this melodious, sometimes slightly smug, yet always serious tone.
