Kevin McCarthy knew in the morning that it would be a bad day for him. Shortly after 10 a.m. local time, he stood in Congress and answered questions from reporters, for the last time as Speaker of the House of Representatives. “If just five Republicans vote with the Democrats, I’m out,” he calculated. That’s pretty realistic, said a reporter. “Probably so,” McCarthy said without showing much emotion. He should be right.
