Radeon RX 7900 GRE: AMD’s golden rabbit appears in European retail

Two dealers from Spain and Romania are selling the Radeon RX 7900 GRE (test) individually. Until now, the graphics card, which AMD unexpectedly introduced at the end of June, was only available outside the Chinese market for system integrators and thus ready-made PCs. This could change now.

RX 7900 GRE as Sapphire Pulse in retail

Because PC Components from Spain and PC Garage from Romania sell the Radeon RX 7900 GRE as a single product, outside of a finished PC or upgrade kit. This means that the golden rabbit has reached European retailers around three months after its launch. In Spain, PC Components is asking for a price of around 720 euros, which puts the graphics card between the smaller Radeon RX 7800 XT (test) and the larger Radeon RX 7900 XT (test). The former is now available for under 550 euros, the latter currently changes hands from around 835 euros.

Interestingly, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE that appeared in retail is not the reference design, but a custom design in the form of the Sapphire Pulse. In this respect, a comparison with the current prices of that model of the next smaller and larger Radeon graphics card is a good idea.

  • Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 7800 XT: 554 euros (-23 percent; -166 euros)
  • Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 7900 GRE: 720 euros
  • Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 7900 XT: 840 euros (+17 percent; +120 euros)

Still not a real option for self-builders

There was particularly great interest in the Radeon RX 7900 GRE in this country because the Radeon RX 7800 XT was only presented at Gamescom a month later. Until the beginning of September, the golden rabbit was the cheapest option for 16 GB of graphics memory with RDNA 3, but now that is no longer the case. The RX 7800 XT also offers 16 GB of VRAM and is only around 6 percent slower, but 23 percent cheaper. If the RX 7900 GRE does not become even cheaper if and when it becomes widely available, the model will probably not remain an option for price-conscious buyers. Only the slightly better energy efficiency due to the larger Navi 31 chip can be an argument.
