Hostility towards Islam and Muslims is not uncommon in Germany. The official figures are already high, and there is a large number of unreported cases.

Bullying, threats, attacks: the Alliance Against Islamophobia and Muslim Hostility recorded 898 anti-Muslim incidents last year.

However, a high number of unreported cases is to be expected, according to the Allianz Claim situation report, which was created for the first time and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs. According to the paper presented, racism is an everyday feature of those affected. Many recorded cases involve women.

Among the documented cases were 500 verbal attacks – such as inflammatory statements, insults, threats and coercion. Eleven threatening letters to mosques with “often excessive threats of violence and death” became known. Interconnections with anti-Semitism are recognizable. Letters would have contained Nazi symbols or references to the Nazi era.

In addition, the situation report mentions 190 cases of discrimination and 167 cases of “hurting behavior”. The latter category included 71 bodily harm, 44 property damage, three arson attacks and 49 other acts of violence. Racially motivated attacks on young people and children are increasing. There are cases where women have been attacked in the presence of their children. Pregnant women were kicked or hit in the stomach.

The authors assume that the number of unreported cases is high because there is no broad coverage. The first situation report included data from ten advice centers in five federal states, as well as reports via the “I-Report” portal, statistics for politically motivated violence, and police and press reports.

Anti-Muslim crimes are often not recognized as such, it said. Or those affected did not report them due to a lack of trust in the authorities. That is why Claim calls for, among other things, the expansion of reporting structures and raising awareness of the topic in authorities, schools and the health sector.
