“Queens” with Batic and Leitmayr

“Queens” is a crime scene with a lot of local color, a lot of humor and a serious topic.

On their 93rd case, Munich detectives Ivo Batic (Miroslav Nemec) and Franz Leitmayr (Udo Wachtveitl) end up in the Bavarian province. There the President of the Bavaria Association is ALMOST dead and it is not clear at first: Was it an accident, a suicide gone wrong or an attempted murder? Crime and entertainment works in this case, says our crime scene checker Simone Sarnow.

Munich crime scene: investigations in the Bavarian province

The Bavarian product queens meet once a year to advertise their products, their regions and of course themselves. This time in the (fictional) Gmeining. So the “Kempten Honey Queen” meets the “Bavarian White Sausage Queen” and the “Aichach Asparagus Queen”. Or, as the girls and their highnesses are called by the organizer of the whole thing, the former wine queen Sylvia (Veronica Verres): “milk”, “asparagus”, “flour” or “onion”.

Humorous case with a serious metoo background

Batic and Leitmayr try to find out why the president of the association, Josef Gehrling (Wolfgang Viereck), is fighting for his life with a hole in his head. This hole was created by a bolt gun that was actually intended to stun cattle. The forensic doctor can hardly say more, because Gerling is not dead, which somehow makes the doctor very nervous. The inspectors get help from the “onion”, or more precisely the “Nördlinger Onion Queen” Annelie, who is a police student in real life.

That all sounds pretty funny, and so are the dialogues. But the case itself has a very serious and classic Metoo background. Because Gerling has “asked” pretty much each of the queens for some sort of sexual favor in order for him to support them. The reference to the “Epstein” case cannot be overlooked.

Tatort review: A successful tightrope walk

So we have provincial clichés, dialogue gags like in “Münster-Tatort”, all accompanied by feel-good music from “LaBrassBanda” and then sexual assaults – all in one crime scene. This could go completely wrong, but somehow the team manages to stay on the razor’s edge they’re riding. For me it is a humorous crime story that entertains. 4 out of 5 moose.
