The Commonwealth Games will be held without the Queen this year. Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla stand in for the monarch.

Queen Elizabeth II (96) will not attend the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham next week. Once again, Prince Charles (73) and Duchess Camilla (75) will represent the monarch, who is patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). That was on Friday announced on Instagram, among others.

The post also states that in addition to Charles and Camilla, other members of the British royal family will be present at the spectacle. The Commonwealth Games take place every four years and bring together 4,600 athletes from a total of 72 nations and countries. The event starts on July 27th and ends on August 8th. Prince Edward (58) will according to the Daily Mail give the speech at the closing ceremony.

In addition, according to another report Prince William (40) and his wife Duchess Kate (40) attend the event, possibly with their children Prince George (9), Princess Charlotte (7) and Prince Louis (4). Prince Edward’s wife Sophie (57) and Princess Anne (71) are said to be present at the games.

Queen is resting in Scotland

The Queen is expected to remain at Balmoral, Scotland, where she traditionally spends her summer holidays, during the Games. The 96-year-old is said to have arrived there on Thursday (July 21).

In October 2021, the Queen gave the starting signal for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The monarch traditionally handed over the baton for the international relay on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace in London. He was thus sent on a journey through all participating nations of the sporting event. There is a message from the Queen on the staff.

In recent months, the Queen, who has just celebrated her platinum jubilee, has had to cancel a number of appointments due to mobility issues. Recently it has already been suspected that the Queen will not take part in the Commonwealth Games due to the strenuous journey from Scotland to Birmingham.
