Frederik X and his wife Mary are the new royal couple in Denmark. A poignant scene occurs on the balcony.
Copenhagen – Romeo and Juliet’s balcony scene is a classic, but King Frederik (55) and Queen Mary (51) kiss will go down in history. After Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (83) had surprisingly announced her resignation on New Year’s Day, but on January 14th the time had finally come.

After exactly 52 years, Frederik replaced his mother with his signature and shortly afterwards, with tears of emotion, he stepped onto the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, where a breathlessly waiting crowd of thousands of Danes and royal fans from all over the world had gathered.
The emotions are making waves for a reason. It is the first abdication of a Danish monarch in 900 years. When the outgoing queen signed the declaration of abdication at around 2 p.m., the change of throne took place. About an hour later, Frederik steps onto the balcony and is tearfully proclaimed king by Prime Minister Mette Frederikson (46), gives his first speech and says his motto.

Then finally Queen Mary enters the balcony, the cheers swell and become deafening. The couple looks at each other and holds each other’s hands. As a wife and mother of four children, Mary knows exactly what is happening with Frederik. The king repeatedly has to wipe the tears from the corner of his eyes with the back of his hand.
And then it happens: It’s not enough that Mary’s dress is white, like at a wedding, the couple kisses, essentially publicly sealing their alliance with the kiss. Rumors had recently shaken the country that Frederik had had an affair. There were voices saying Margrethe chose the time to resign not only because of her poor health.
