Putsch in Niger: Silent weapons, powerless West, self-confident putschists

The invasion will not happen for the time being. The states of the West African confederation of states Ecowas had actually threatened the putschists in Niger with violence if they were not to heave the elected President Mohamed Bazoum back into office. But neither the one nor the other happened. On Thursday, the heads of state and government of the Ecowas member states want to discuss the situation in Niger in Nigeria’s capital Abuja.

Niger’s rulers appoint prime minister

The USA, with the help of its top diplomat, Victoria Nuland, have also tried to persuade the new regime to give in. In vain. After a meeting with leaders of the military junta spoke of an “open but also difficult” conversation. Her request to meet President Bazoum, who had been ousted and arrested, was also turned down.

Around two weeks after their coup d’état, those in power appointed the economist Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine as the new prime minister. Lamine Zeine most recently worked for the African Development Bank in Chad.
