Since the invasion of Ukraine, it has become fashionable to dismiss Vladimir Putin as a dangerous lunatic. As a ruler with thousands upon thousands of nuclear weapons who doesn’t know what he’s doing. And who is therefore deprived of power, imprisoned or killed by his followers at the end of a Ukraine war that Kiev and its Western supporters naturally won. The opposite is more likely the case. Putin is not insane. He knows what he’s doing and plays for time. He is far from losing the Ukraine war. He might even win it – or at least not lose it for all to see.
