Pullach – school roof collapsed under heavy rain – district of Munich

The heavy rain on the night of June 24 was too much for the roof of the Josef Breher Middle School in Pullach. As head of construction engineering Peter Kotzur reported at the municipal council meeting, the flat roof collapsed in the middle under the weight of the rainwater, which then poured into the wooden roof structure, which collapsed in places and could no longer be saved. For the municipal council there was no question that the roof had to be replaced as soon as possible, and so they unanimously voted to allocate 150,000 euros. The damage is extremely painful for the school because the affected room is very important for lunchtime care and lessons, Kotzur said.

The building is currently closed and efforts are being made to repair the damage as soon as possible. The rector hopes that the rooms can be used again after the holidays, and the aim is for completion by early autumn, said Kotzur. Roofers and carpenters have already been found, and they are still looking for a demolition company to remove the damaged roof structure. After an inspection with a structural engineer, it is clear that the roof construction has to be demolished down to the concrete cover.

In its place, a flat pent roof with a six percent pitch is to be erected. It is clear that this roof is not intended for eternity, after all the middle school is to be rebuilt and the old building is to be demolished in ten to 15 years. The emergency roof erected by the Federal Agency for Technical Relief is first opened at the side so that the space between the concrete ceiling and the roof waterproofing can dry out. Only after drilling a screed do you know how much water has penetrated, so the costs are only roughly estimated, said Andreas Most (Pullach plus), who chaired the meeting for the ill mayor Susanna Millennium (Greens).

Insurance will not compensate for this damage, the community has no elementary insurance, said treasurer André Schneider when asked by Christine Eisenmann (CSU). Precisely because the school building will not have a long service life, Kotzur, Head of Construction Engineering, did not take up Angelika Metz’s suggestion of installing a photovoltaic system on the new roof.
