It stinks almost all the time, is always too crowded and only moderately reliable: Yes, we Germans like to complain about local public transport. Sometimes rightly so, sometimes not. According to a current ranking, we are actually quite satisfied with public transport, at least in the federal capital. The international online magazine “time out“, wanted to know which city has the world’s most popular local transport.
So it asked its readers from a total of 333 cities in 59 countries around the world: Is it easy to get around your city by public transport? If more than 80 percent of residents answered “yes,” then the city ended up in the magazine’s ranking.
Why Berliners love their public transport
And the Berliners simply missed their beloved public transport in first place. A total of 97 percent of them stated that public transport in the capital is easy to use. While that doesn’t make up for the smell, the crowds, and the occasional cancellations, it’s a form of appreciation.
The survey does not show how modern, cheap or objectively practical public transport in the cities is. But it gives an indication of how accessible buses and trains are in the world’s metropolises. And that plays a major role, especially for tourists when they want to orientate themselves in an unfamiliar city for the first time. So it shouldn’t be that difficult in Berlin.
