Public prosecutor’s office requests public defender for 17-year-old suspect

After the fatal knife attack on a teacher in the town of Ibbenbüren in the Tecklenburg region, there were first interrogations. Investigators assume that the 17-year-old had problems at school.

This was the result of the first investigations and witness interviews by a homicide commission, the police and public prosecutor announced on Wednesday in Münster

The student is said to have killed a 55-year-old teacher in a vocational college classroom on Tuesday afternoon. A public defender had been appointed for the accused, the public prosecutor said.

The youth has not yet been questioned. He may be brought before the magistrate this Wednesday. The spokesman initially did not want to say anything about the background to the crime.

The suspect’s recurring conflicts with teachers are said to have resulted in a one-day expulsion from school by the school management on Tuesday morning.

In the afternoon, the 17-year-old is said to have visited his class teacher in the school building, where she was alone in a classroom at the time. Why she was there alone and the student apparently knew this was still unclear.

According to the public prosecutor’s office in Münster, the 17-year-old made the emergency call himself after the crime and was then arrested without resistance. According to the first investigations by the homicide squad, he is said to have visited the 55-year-old in the school building.

Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger reacted with dismay to the act. “The violent death of the teacher is stunned. We must do everything we can to better protect teachers from violence,” she told the news portal “t-online”. The FDP politician added that it is unacceptable that teachers are regularly insulted, threatened and attacked.

The body will be autopsied on Wednesday at the earliest, said a police spokeswoman. The public prosecutor’s office told the “Bild”: “It is currently still unclear whether the suspect acted because of school or private problems or possibly has psychological problems.”

There was a larger police presence at the vocational college on Tuesday. In addition to several patrol cars, a rescue helicopter, an ambulance and an emergency chaplain also arrived. (dpa)
