For the first time since taking power, the Taliban have publicly executed a man. The regime makes it impossible for people in Afghanistan to live in dignity. There seems to be only one realistic way out, and that will only make things worse for the time being.

It sounded like an invitation to a party. In a province in south-west Afghanistan, the Taliban had called on all townspeople to “meet us on the sports field.” Many residents followed the call on Wednesday. Instead of hosting a game, the Taliban had a man publicly executed there. Time in Afghanistan does not stand still. The Taliban are turning back the clocks.
