Public broadcasting: SWR director Gniffke becomes ARD chairman

SWR-Intendant Gniffke follows Tom Buhrow in 2023 as ARD-Chairman. This was decided by the directors and committee chairmen. In the course of rbbaffair, Gniffke takes over the office a year earlier than planned.

The director of Südwestrundfunk (SWR), Kai Gniffke, will take over in 2023 ARD-Presidency. That’s what they decided ARDdirectors and committee chairmen in Bremen. After the resignation of the now dismissed rbb-Intendant Patricia Schlesinger from ARD-Presidency Gniffke starts a year earlier than planned.

Gniffke follows the WDR-Intendant Tom Buhrow, who holds the office of ARD-Chairman after Schlesinger’s departure.

Unrest in rbb and NDR

Of the WDR-Intendant thanked Gniffke for agreeing to take over the office of ARD– to take office early. “These are challenging times for ARD that we can only tackle together. These days are particularly evident,” said Buhrow. “People in the country expect us, as a public service broadcaster, to draw conclusions from mistakes and act transparently.” This is a responsible task in which Gniffke has the full support of the community.

Gniffke takes over ARD-Business in a difficult time. The Berlin-Brandenburg Radio (rbb) has plunged into a deep crisis amid allegations of felt. Also at Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) it rumbles.

Office for two years

Of the ARD-Presidency changes from time to time among the nine state broadcasters. As a rule, an intendant stays in office for two years.
