Crazy serial killers or unapproachable lunatics – this is how one imagines psychopaths. But according to psychologist Kevin Dutton from Oxford University, the clinical picture can be understood much more broadly. He believes society benefits even from psychopaths. “Psychopaths are very charismatic. They have an infectious energy, there is an aura of indomitable surrounding them. There is a reason for this: Psychopaths are not plagued by the same fears as the rest of us. Anything is possible for them. They focus on the positive. That is very inspiring. Psychopaths as bosses, lawyers or surgeons
Dutton believes that people with this personality disorder live in the middle of society – and are happy to find a job in which they can express their psychopathic tendencies. He did a large study in the UK in 2011. “This study is unique: it is the first study to measure psychopathic properties within the workforce in an entire country. I wondered what will be the most psychopathic profession in the UK? The result was a real eye-opener. Number one was company bosses” so Dutton.
