Protests against lignite mining: In the mud of “Lützi” – politics

from

Christian Wernicke, Lützerath

The march into eco-utopia leads through the mud. The wet earth shines black, in some places the boots of the camp residents sink into the mud, ankle-deep and smacking their lips. “No, you never really get used to it,” says an anti-coal activist. He grins in anguish as he shovels mulch from a wheelbarrow in order to create a narrow, reasonably dry footpath to the camp canteen past tents, tree houses and wooden huts. Tomorrow, he knows, he’ll have to work again: raindrops stir up the puddles, wet socks wriggle in the wind on a line.
