Protest in front of the Reichstag building in Berlin: Numerous people gather in the government district as a sign of solidarity with Ukraine – and lie down on the ground.

In protest against Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, several thousand people lay down on the ground in Berlin’s government district on Wednesday.

This so-called human carpet was intended to commemorate the people killed, according to an announcement of the demonstration at the Reichstag building. 5,000 participants were registered for the protest by the Alliance of Ukrainian Organizations.

Shortly after the rally started, the Reichstag meadow was filled with thousands of people. They chanted: “Embargo on Russian gas and oil”. Reports from people in the war zone were also read out. Many were dressed in the national colors of Ukraine and had red teardrops on their eyes. Eventually, the protesters lay down on the ground with their eyes closed or their hands behind their backs as if tied.

Pictures from the small town of Bucha, where numerous bodies of residents were found on the streets after the withdrawal of Russian troops, have been causing horror around the world since the weekend. Ukraine is convinced that Russian soldiers committed serious war crimes in the city. Moscow denies that.
