Berlin police prepare for demonstrations despite the ban
Despite the banned “lateral thinker” demos, the police are apparently expecting protests in Berlin. Hundreds of people are deployed to enforce the ban on demonstrations. Meanwhile, a final decision by the Higher Administrative Court is still pending.
The police have been preparing for unauthorized demonstrations against the federal government’s corona measures in the Berlin city area since Saturday morning. As a police spokeswoman confirmed to the rbb on Saturday on request, several hundred are on duty to enforce the existing demonstration bans. “The focus is to see if people gather,” said a spokeswoman on Saturday morning. Bars have been set up in the area of the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag.
Participants in the “lateral thinking” initiative announced to come and demonstrate despite the prohibitions.
Decision on urgent applications to the Higher Administrative Court still open
The Berlin administrative court had rejected an application against the ban on a “lateral thinking” demonstration on Friday. A decision from the Higher Administrative Court is expected in the course of the day. By early Saturday noon, three urgent motions against the ban on a demonstration on Saturday and two on Sunday had been received, said a spokeswoman.
A number of other demonstrations, which, according to their title, are also directed against politics in the corona pandemic, have not been banned. Among them are several registered car corsos, as a police spokeswoman said.
13 planned “lateral thinkers” demos forbidden
A total of 13 demonstrations planned for the weekend by opponents of the corona measures were banned. Among the rejected urgent requests is an event for which more than 20,000 people have been registered.
Also a demonstration planned for Sunday under the motto “For Peace, Freedom, Truth” with 3,500 people remains banned after the decision of the court. The Berlin police had essentially forbidden the gatherings, citing that such demonstrations regularly violated protection against infection.
A spokesman for the administrative court justified the rejected urgent requests on Friday with the fact that the Delta variant of the corona virus also spreads outdoors.
