Process for the Lake Garda accident: the accused receive prison sentences – Panorama

In June 2021, two people from Munich rammed a wooden boat with their luxury motorboat on Lake Garda at night, killing the couple in it. Now the two have been sentenced to four and almost three years in prison.

In the criminal proceedings surrounding the fatal motorboat accident on Lake Garda, the two accused were sentenced to prison terms. The main accused has to go to prison for four and a half years, the second two years and eleven months – that’s what a court in Brescia announced in the first instance. The two Munich residents were accused of negligent homicide and failure to provide assistance. Last June, they rammed a wooden boat with a luxury motorboat on Lake Garda at night, killing two of its occupants. After the collision, they drove on.

In their plea last week, the public prosecutor’s office demanded that the driver of the boat should go to prison for six and a half years and its owner for four years and two months. The two people from Munich drove across the popular lake in northern Italy in the late evening of June 19, 2021 and rammed a smaller wooden boat. In this sat Umberto G. and Greta N., his girlfriend. G. died immediately, N. fell into the water – divers later found her body.

The accused stated in the trial that they had not noticed the accident in the dark; they assumed they had collided with driftwood. At the same time they asked the bereaved for forgiveness. The prosecutor, however, rejected this explanation: The main defendant had been drinking alcohol throughout the afternoon and was therefore no longer fit to drive. He turned himself in to the authorities a good two weeks after the collision. The verdict is not yet legally binding; it is considered likely that the case will be brought to the next higher court.
