Prison overcrowding hits a new record, with 73,162 detainees on May 1

Sad performance. The number of detainees reached a new historic record on May 1, with 73,162 people incarcerated in French prisons, according to official data from the Ministry of Justice consulted by AFP on Tuesday.

The bar of 73,000 detainees had already been crossed on April 1. Overall prison density now stands at 120.2% in prisons, which suffer from chronic overcrowding that continues to worsen.
