On Friday evening there was again a lot of talk about 1992, the year that Queen Elizabeth II herself called the “annus horribilis”. 1992 was arguably the royal family’s worst year in modern history: Windsor Castle burned, the marital war between Charles and Diana reached new, sordid lows, and two of the Queen’s other children, Andrew and Anne, divorced. Of course, we don’t yet know what the year 2024 will be called at the end, but things aren’t going well. 2024 is now the year in which King Charles III. and his daughter-in-law Kate were not only in the same hospital at the same time, but both were diagnosed with cancer.
