Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice were nearly stripped of their royal titles. A veto prevented the decision.

Nowadays it is hard to imagine the British royal family without the two princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. But it almost happened in their childhood that they lost the royal title again.

The historian Marlene Koenig, who has been researching the British royal family for four decades, told the news portal “Express” that there was a “cruel plan” to deprive the two girls of their titles. Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are the Queen’s granddaughters and daughters of Prince Andrew and the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson.

By birth, Andrew’s daughters received royal titles

Prince Andrew’s two daughters were given the titles Princess and HRH (Her Royal Highness) at birth. This has been a tradition for over a hundred years. Attributed to King George V. Under whose reign it was stipulated that the ruler’s children and grandchildren should be given the titles of Prince or Princess and HRH.

According to Koenig, there was a suggestion that the two princesses should be deprived of their titles as children. There is said to have been a heated discussion on the subject, but in the end it was decided against, due to a veto by one of the panellists. However, the researcher and author does not reveal who filed this decisive veto at the time. However, her suspicion is that the consideration was overturned because a title withdrawal would have been considered “cruel”.

Although Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are not full-time Royals, they do attend events as members or representatives of the Court. They will also attend their grandmother the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
