In fact, he was by her side for years. And yet Princess Diana died believing her private secretary, Patrick Jephson, had become disloyal.

The scandalous interview with Princess Diana and Martin Bashir (BBC) not only had a massive impact on the lives of the royals. For Diana’s private secretary Patrick Jephson, the “Panorama” conversation meant the end of his time with the Royals. The relationship with his boss: broken. Jephson has now been compensated by the British broadcaster BBC, which broadcast the interview.

Princess Diana’s ex-private secretary donates

“The BBC accepts and recognizes that Commander Jephson was seriously harmed by the circumstances surrounding the 1995 interview with Diana, Princess of Wales,” the broadcaster said in a statement. Jephson donated the £100,000 compensation to a children’s hospice.

Last year it was revealed how journalist Martin Bashir had gained access to the princess. According to an investigation by British judge Lord Dyson, he lied to get what he wanted: an exclusive interview. As the Daily Mail revealed, Bashir told the princess that her private secretary, Jephson, was spying on her. The man who had been loyal to her for years.

She believed Patrick Jephson betrayed her

“Why did this relationship suddenly turn to ashes and what did that mean for my life? I had a young family and it was a tough time, so I’m relieved that Dyson gave an explanation,” Jephson told the Daily Mail. The heaviest burden for him is still the knowledge that his former boss felt deceived by him. “She died believing I had betrayed her after eight rewarding but often very difficult years in which we had worked so closely together. The sudden discovery that it was not a misunderstanding but a calculated, cold-blooded betrayal acted is still very difficult to process,” he explained.

After his end as Diana’s private secretary, Jephson never worked for a member of the Royals again.
