Prince William wants to help the homeless. The heir to the British crown is launching a program on Monday that aims to end the problem of homelessness in the United Kingdom.
Called Homewards, the five-year project wants to “demonstrate that it is possible to put an end” to the question of the homeless, announced in a press release the Royal Foundation of Prince William and his wife Kate. “It’s a daunting task, but I firmly believe that by working together it is possible to ensure that homelessness is rare, brief, and not repeated,” said King Charles’ eldest son.
A project that relies on local partners
This is a major new project for the Prince of Wales, who has already launched the Earthshot Awards in 2020, created to distinguish innovations in favor of the environment, at a time when the monarchy, shaken by a multitude of scandals, appears particularly eager to demonstrate its usefulness for British society.
Aged 41, William must go this Monday, but also Tuesday, for the launch in the six places of the program, starting with London. The project, led by the Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales, relies on local partners – individuals, organisations, companies – who will work together to deliver a tailor-made local plan, based on “local needs and local expertise.
Half of the homeless are minors
One of the axes aims to unlock housing on a large scale. The idea then is to create a model that can be adopted in other places in the UK as well as overseas.
According to the Royal Foundation of William and Kate, the United Kingdom has more than 300,000 people, half of whom are minors, who do “sofa surfing”, sleep on the streets, live in their cars, in hotels or other accommodation temporary.
