Although Prince Harry has a contract with Netflix, a new documentary with him is being shown at the competition. What’s behind it?

The US streaming service Hulu shows Prince Harry’s (39) new documentary about the Invictus Games – even though competitor Netflix has a five-year contract with the royal. According to the Daily Mail, the Hulu format will be a “one-off show” in which the Duke of Sussex talks about his family and his commitment to the Invictus Games.

It is called “Prince Harry’s Mission: Life, Family And The Invictus Games” and, according to media reports, is based on interviews that Harry has given to “ABC News” in Canada in recent weeks. This includes a high-profile appearance on “Good Morning America” on February 16, which took place on the sidelines of the “Invictus Games One Year To Go” event in Canada. In the show, Prince Harry spoke about his short visit to his father King Charles (75), who was suffering from cancer. The Duke of Sussex said he hoped the diagnosis could have a “unifying effect” on the royal family.

What will happen to the Sussexes’ Netflix deal?

The fact that Harry’s new documentary is being shown on Hulu instead of Netflix is leading to new speculation in the British media. The Daily Mail reportsa “high-ranking source” at Netflix explained that Harry and his wife Duchess Meghan (42) still have a contract with Netflix, “but they seemed surprised by the news.” In the “Mirror,” on the other hand, it says from PR expert Jane Owen that it was very unlikely that Netflix didn’t know about it.

Speculation surrounding Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s deal with Netflix, which is supposedly set to expire in 2025, has been going on for several weeks. After three productions that have appeared so far and one discontinued project, there is still something from the Sussexes in the works. Bela Bajaria, chief content officer at Netflix, said at an event in early February, according to industry portal Deadline: “They have two unscripted things they’re working on with Brandon [Riegg] work. And they have a bunch of projects in development, they have a movie in development and a scripted series they’re working on. So it’s all in very early stages of development, with a film, a TV series and two unscripted shows.”

So far, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have implemented three projects for Netflix with their company Archewell Productions – the docuseries “Harry & Meghan”, “Heart of Invictus” and “Live to Lead”. “Harry & Meghan” in particular caused a stir and debuted at the end of 2022 as the streaming service’s most-watched documentary format ever in a launch week. Meanwhile, work on a planned animated series entitled “Pearl” is said to have been stopped in 2022.
