According to the first projections, the Austrian Federal President Van der Bellen won well over 50 percent in the presidential election and thus achieved the required absolute majority. This eliminates a runoff.
According to extrapolations, the Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen was already confirmed in office in the first round of the election. According to the broadcaster ORF, the 78-year-old received an absolute majority of 54.6 percent of the votes. After that, a runoff election is no longer necessary.
Van der Bellen ran again as an independent candidate, apart from him there were six other candidates. Four of them can be assigned to the right camp. Van der Bellen has the express or tacit support of most of Austria’s major parties. The exception is the right-wing FPÖ, which had put forward its own candidate in Walter Rosenkranz. According to the projection, Rosencrantz reached 18.9 percent.
The Federal President can be re-elected once in Austria. In Austria, all federal presidents who ran for a second term have been confirmed in office. Of the nine million inhabitants of Austria, 6.4 million eligible voters were called to vote.
