Premiere: Karl Barto’s “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” in Fankfurt – Culture

Great metaphors are always valid, and then there are those that suddenly emerge from oblivion and take on new validity. The electric pioneer and long-time power plant-Teammate Karl Bartos discovered one of these with “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”. Robert Wiene’s 1920 action-horror blockbuster was one of the first films to employ plot twists that upend the entire narrative. “Caligari is only superficially about the search for truth,” summarized Bartos in a text panel at the beginning of the premiere of his new sound version in the Alte Oper Frankfurt. “What we are actually experiencing is the disappearance of reality.”
