The German coach Jürgen Klopp with Liverpool FC and Thomas Tuchel with Chelsea FC remain close on the heels of leaders Manchester City in the English Premier League. The Reds fought 1-0 (0-0) on Saturday against Aston Villa, trained by Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard. Chelsea got a lucky 3-2 (1-1) win against Leeds United through a penalty in added time.
After a weak and poor first half in Anfield and a few boos at the break, Liverpool increased the pressure after the break and became increasingly dangerous. But against the deeply standing guests, the Klopp-Elf needed a penalty to take the lead. After Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah was brought down by Tyrone Mings, the fouled hit himself in the 67th minute from the penalty spot.
Chelsea’s Jorginho is sure of the point
Chelsea – with DFB professionals Antonio Rüdiger, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner in the starting eleven – initially fell behind at London’s Stamford Bridge due to a penalty from Raphinha (28th). Mason Mount (42nd) and Jorginho (58th) with a penalty kick turned the game around before Joe Gelhardt (83rd) equalized for Leeds. When everything looked like a draw, Chelsea were awarded another penalty, which Jorginho (90 + 4) converted again.
With their narrow wins, Liverpool and Chelsea keep up with leaders Man City. The soccer champions had previously outnumbered Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 (0-0) and led the Premier League table with 38 points after the 16th matchday. Liverpool FC is second with 37 points. Tuchel’s Chelsea ranks third with 36 points.
Record champions Manchester United with their new coach Ralf Rangnick also won their away game at Norwich City with a penalty. Cristiano Ronaldo (75th), who had been fouled himself, scored the decisive goal to make it 1-0 (0-0) at the stubborn bottom of the table, Norwich. The strong hosts had some good chances themselves, but were not efficient enough. Man United moved up to fifth place with the victory, the gap to the top of the table is still twelve points.
Setback for Juventus Turin
Italy’s record champions Juventus Turin continues to chase their own claims in Serie A. On the 17th matchday, the old lady did not get beyond a disappointing 1: 1 (1: 0) at the newly promoted FC Venice. The third win in Serie A in a row was missed.
