The ski jokes are over for the time being: in the next few days it will be significantly cooler in Germany.

After a midsummer weekend, Tief Marcellinus cools off just in time for the start of the week. “With a distinctive cold front, the low foothills cross us from west to east today and lead to a significant drop in temperature, especially in the eastern half,” said meteorologist Felix Dietzsch from the German Weather Service (DWD) on Monday. There, the maximum values would initially rise to up to 33 degrees and then drop to around 20 degrees.

The reason is that the low brings significantly cooler sea air to Germany. “This striking change in air masses will therefore not remain without consequences. Showers and thunderstorms will form over the course of the day, especially in the north,” says Dietzsch. “These increase in intensity the further east they go in the direction of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg.”

And what are the future prospects? According to the DWD, unstable weather is to be expected in the coming days.

Patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms

On Tuesday, the sky in the north and east will be cloudy and there may be repeated showers and thunderstorms. In the southwest and south there will be some sun from time to time, but it will mostly remain dry. The temperatures only reach a maximum of 22 to 26 degrees, at the sea it stays fresher at around 20 degrees. In addition, a moderate, in the north and north-east partly fresh, at times strong gusty wind will blow from west to north-west. Some stormy gusts are expected near thunderstorms.

Wednesday will start in the south with the rain fading away quickly, after which it will mostly stay dry. Only later can a few drops fall in western Germany. According to the DWD, it will remain clear for a long time on the coast and in the south-west. The temperatures reach between 19 and 24 degrees, in the southwest even up to 26 degrees. In addition, a weak wind blows from mostly westerly directions.

On Thursday, rain and isolated thunderstorms can rise in the northwestern half. Otherwise, according to the forecasts, it will initially be sunny – in the south and in the mountains isolated thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon. It’s getting warmer again with maximum temperatures of 25 to 29 degrees, only in the north-west and in the far north are the values slightly lower.
