The story I’m telling takes place at a time when the Nazi officials had burned the old brown party book and bought a new one. It is set at a time when Hans Globke, the commentator on the Nuremberg Race Laws, was State Secretary in Konrad Adenauer’s Federal Chancellery. It is set in the Cold War era. It is set at a time when the German Federal Republic absolutely did not want to deal with the Nazi past. Anti-communism took the place of such coming to terms with the past; he became the unifying bond of the economic miracle society. Almost delusional, Adenauer’s policy saw world communism at work behind every criticism. A later Federal President, it was Gustav Heinemann, was accused of pro-Communism and illegally bugged by the secret services.
