Angela Merkel on the road as a spy in Moscow: The then Prime Minister of the GDR, Lothar de Maizière, sent Merkel to test the mood of the Russian population and how they think about a possible reunification of the two German states. That was in April 1990, when the Berlin Wall had fallen and de Maizière was in Moscow for his first visit. Merkel was on this trip as deputy government spokeswoman.
